One day I heard a heavy knock on my door, shattering the usual tranquility. “Ron, have you seen Ann?” The urgency in my friend Paul’s voice startled me. I abruptly replied no and asked him what was going on. She had been hanging out with a young punk, Manuel. Word was out that Ann had started using hard drugs again, and now she had disappeared without a trace. Over the next month, with assistance from a private investigator, the pieces of the puzzle started falling into place. Ann had left with Manuel for his family’s agave ranch outside Tequila, Mexico. Her parents felt certain she was being held against her will. Ann’s distraught parents, aware of my background as a retired sheriff ’s deputy and undercover agent, implored me to intervene. I found myself drawn into Paul’s quest to extricate Ann. Paul assembled a team of three, and together we devised a meticulous rescue plan. Determined to free her from the grip of Manuel, we embarked on a perilous mission to Mexico. So began a harrow-ing ordeal that would test the courage and fortitude of us all.
This novel is based on true events, but certain details, people, names, places, and timelines have been altered.
Tactical training teaches us to be prepared, plan for the worst, and hope for the best. Ron did all three.
